Learning Design

Learning design is the intentional process of creating effective, engaging educational experiences that align teaching goals with intended learner outcomes. Learning designers support you to incorporate evidence-based strategies in your course design, promote accessibility and inclusivity, and integrate technology seamlessly in various course modalities. We can help you enhance your teaching effectiveness to foster student success.

What can our team of experts do for you?

In partnership with both subject matter experts and related UBC support units, we apply a research-informed approach to support a complete development and renewal cycle for individual courses, from design and development to implementation and evaluation. We provide the following support:

  • Guide you through the process of new course development or course redesign and transformation.
  • Review your course to provide recommendations on ways to potentially improve course design (e.g., syllabus, learning outcomes, activities, assessments).
  • Recommend and support diverse assessment strategies aligned with learning outcomes.
  • Recommend instructional strategies to keep students motivated and engaged throughout the course.
  • Coordinate and assist you in developing engaging course materials, including effective content presentation using a variety of instructional media.
  • Provide one-on-one support to integrate technologies seamlessly into your teaching.
  • Guide you to make your course accessible to all students, fostering inclusivity.
  • Support for encouraging academic integrity through course and assessment design.
  • Support ongoing course refinement based on course learning analytics data, student feedback, and/or teaching evaluations. Recommendations regarding course site structure, navigation, and clarity of instructions. Development of customized course site templates based on in-depth review of syllabus and assessment descriptions. Suggest support mechanisms for students.
